Tips for Spring Cleaning

Life outside of organizing is super busy as spring has officially arrived! I am sure we are all playing the balancing act. For me, between spring sports (lacrosse and baseball for my two boys), end of year activities, graduations, and spring festivities, life is a whirlwind.

I can’t believe next fall my oldest will be in high school! He will be attending Benedictine Military School and we are so excited for him. My youngest son loves attending Tybee Maritime Academy where he is a rising 4th grader. You cannot beat going to school at the beach, right?!

Back at the office, I am excited to work with multiple clients over the next few months as we are digging into spring cleaning, and we have no plans to slow down during the summer as I am also gearing up for some additional projects for commercial clients.

With all that said and with the busy life we all lead, let me know if I can assist you with your organizing goals – now is the perfect time to dive in as we approach the summer months!

Tips for Spring Cleaning

Spring is here and House of Von wants to provide you with tips to Live More with Less Clutter! Small changes and habits can make a huge impact on your daily routine. A few tips for spring cleaning include –

  • Seasonal swap to your entryway and coat rack

    • Grab a laundry basket, put on music, set a timer, and get to work. Move heavy winter coats to the back and rotate rain gear and light weight jackets to the front.

  • Tackle the Tupperware

    • Toss any items that do not match. Drawer organizers help maintain the space but you must periodically purge to keep it tidy. Emptying the dishwasher is the perfect time to check matches and toss missing parts.

  • Underwear and Socks – Say Sayonara

    • I love drawer organizers to help maintain your socks and undergarments. They also limit your supply to a reasonable amount. There is only seven days in a week – are you sure you need 70 pairs of socks?!

  • Spring in Savannah

    • Spring in Savannah means sunshine and sand gnats. Toss any expired sunscreen and restock your supply of bug spray.

  • Storing Memorabilia

    • Think outside of the box! Instead of storing in a standard container – reuse old luggage, camp trunks, and more to store photos, awards, and special keepsakes.

  • Small Spaces Make a Big Impact

    • Kitchen and bathroom sinks are some of the smallest spaces but we use them daily. To max out storage – add pullout to take advantage of wasted vertical space.

Commercial Client Update

I love helping my commercial clients set up their offices! It’s great to leave the details to me and let them continue with their daily routine. I recently worked with Anne Pappas Interiors and her team to organize their supply closet in their new office and studio. These before and after photographs are a testament to all the amazing selections they offer their wonderful clients. By implementing an organizational approach to their vendor and supply options, they are able to easily obtain the necessary items to present during the entire interior design process.

I was able to include some additional tips in this issue on how you can “Clean Out for a Charitable Cause.” Highlighted below are some tips on locating donation baskets throughout your home. This will allow you to give back various items to the many amazing non-profit organizations within our community.

  • Make a habit that when you try something on and it’s too small or doesn’t flatter your figure…toss in the donation basket for a charitable cause

  • Kids grow fast! Clean out their closets and fill the donor basket with items that others can benefit from – and don’t forget backpacks, purses, coats, and shoes!

  • Rule of thumb is if you haven't worn it in 2 years – toss it! Someone else can use it!

  • Avoid using trash bags! Consider reusing shopping bags so that people don’t mistake your donations for garbage.

  • I try to aim for a closet purge at least 2x per year!
